OK, I give up, why was it called the Manchester and Birmingham Railway if it was built between Manchester and Crewe? -- Kjlewis 21:06, 17 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Because it would run from Manchester to Birmingham, a more direct route than the GJR, but would share its metals from Crawe IIRC Chevin 20:34, 9 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Now I seem to recall reading somewhere that the M&B had talks with the Great Western Railway about building a broad gauge line through Rugby, and up the trent valley thus bypassing the GJR and L&BR. In fact the Great Western even went so far as building their line from Oxford towards Rugby for a few miles. Which was later abandoned. Is this right?. I'll try to look it up.
